Downloading StarLogo TNG models from web pages

Depending on the server and browser, downloading a StarLogo TNG model file from a web page and saving it to a desktop or laptop computer can be a little tricky. For best results, follow these steps:

  1. Do not click on the link to the file in the usual way! Instead, right-click (or control-click, on a Mac) on the link.

  2. In response to the right-click on a link, your browser displays a pop-up menu of options. Depending on the browser, this menu will look something like one of the following:

    • Firefox

    • Chrome

    • Safari

    • Internet Explorer

  3. In the pop-up menu, click "Save link as …" (Firefox and Chrome), "Download linked file as …" (Safari), or "Save target as …" (Internet Explorer).

  4. Next, the browser asks you to select a location where the downloaded file will be saved. At the same time, you can change the file name and extension, and the file type. Make sure that the file name ends with ".sltng" (i.e. the file name extension is "sltng"), and the file type is either "All files" or "Open StarLogo TNG file", as shown here:

    • Firefox

    • Firefox (Mac)

    • Chrome

    • Internet Explorer

Please note that the file name extension might originally be set to something other than ".sltng", and the file type selected by default might be "Text Document", "ASCII Text", or "XML Document":

    • Firefox

    • Firefox (Mac)

    • Internet Explorer

Saving a file with "Text Document", "ASCII Text", or "XML Document" selected, or with an extension other than ".sltng", will cause problems when you later try to open the file. Be sure to change the file extension and file type as needed!

  5. Be sure to select a logical location to save the file. For example, the Desktop folder, the My Document folder (or Documents folder, on the Mac), or your personal flash drive would all be good choices. Do not save the file in the projects sub-folder of the StarLogo TNG program folder!

  6. When you've specified an appropriate location, file name, and file type, click the Save button. The model file will now be downloaded. Model files usually aren't very large, so the download should be completed fairly quickly, and the file can then be opened in StarLogo TNG.

Note: Almost all of the above instruction are also applicable to NetLogo files. The only significant difference is that "Open StarLogo TNG file" will never be presented as one of the file type options for saving; thus, "All files" should be selected.
